Early Modern European Art: Leonardo’s Salvator Mundi: Materiality, History, Attribution & Impact

This seminar provides an in-depth examination of the Salvator Mundi, a painting attributed to Leonardo da Vinci. The course will explore various aspects of the painting including its materiality and techniques, its pictorial type, historical background, and significance as well as the modern idea of sole authorship. We will also delve into the debates on the authenticity of the painting, its place within Leonardo’s career and workshop practices, restoration methods and controversies, marketing strategies, and sales history. A comprehensive analysis of the methodological implications of these aspects will be emphasized.
