Wandering Utopias: Writing and Rewriting Reality

Raphael J. Piguet

Back to "Fall 2026" courses

Through analytical reflections, creative writing, and project-based assignments, this course studies the intersections of travel narratives with utopian thought and their philosophical and aesthetic implications. Travelers encounter and strive to describe otherness, yet utopian discourses suppress otherness in the name of equality. How are concepts such as diversity, equity, nature, or freedom problematized in this context? Which values should a society prioritize? We will discuss works across different genres and periods, exploring issues such as migration, politics, and ecology, while reinforcing linguistic, creative and critical skills.
