Sean Toland

German

Sean Toland is a 5th year PhD candidate in the Department of German. He graduated with a BA in Comparative Literature from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst in 2012 and studied Comparative Literature at the Freie Universität Berlin in 2012-2013. His dissertation research focuses on literary ideas of a musical public around 1800, especially the connection between spaces of public performance and literary and journalistic publications on music. He is also interested in theories of humor, the mutual influence of lyric poetry and art song, and the effect of aesthetic theorizing on societal standards of taste.
