Certificate student Schmidt-Swartz selected as 2017 Scholar in the Nation’s Service

Elon Schmidt-Swartz

Schmidt-Swartz is pursuing a certificate in the Program in European Cultural Studies.

Elon Schmidt-Swartz ’18, of Los Angeles, California, a Philosophy major and certificate student in the Program in European Cultural Studies, has been selected a Marlene Hess and James D. Zirin ’61 Scholar in the Scholars in the Nation’s Service (SINSI) program of the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.

A 2015 recipient of the Shapiro Prize for Academic Excellence, Elon has focused his academic work at Princeton on political theory and moral philosophy, with a particular interest in the principles of justice that underlie public establishments in Europe and America. A member of Pace Council for Civic Values and a volunteer through the Prison Electives Project, where he delivers philosophy classes to inmates at New Jersey prisons, Elon has also served as a student leader at Princeton’s Center for Jewish Life, and has performed with the Princeton Shakespeare Company and Theater Intime.

Elon reports that participation in ECS has helped to shape his academic pursuits in significant ways. “Descartes, Spinoza, and Leibniz,” taught by Daniel Garber, piqued his curiosity in the relationship between epistemologies of the early-modern period and Enlightenment institutions, and “Crises of European Subjectivity, 1945-1961,” taught by Daniel Hoffman-Schwartz, allowed him to ponder the shortcomings of Enlightenment institutions, particularly with regard to the protection of stateless populations during World-War II.

Elon expects that his work as a SINSI intern will draw upon his coursework in ECS, as he plans to intern at the Immigrant and Employee Rights Section of Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.
