Austen Hinkley is a graduate student in Comparative Literature. His work focuses on modern European philosophy, poetics, aesthetics, and literature, with a particular emphasis on German. Austen graduated from Bard College with a BA in Literature and Philosophy in 2016. Austen’s dissertation focuses on the German word Witz, tracing its development from a term describing a faculty of the mind into a term for a kind of language use, the joke. Aside from German, Austen has also worked on French, Ancient Greek, and Japanese literature and philosophy.
